Children's Day falls on Saturday, 14 November this year, which means most schools will hold their functions on the Friday before, 13 November. If you have been asked to anchor the celebration, this is your complete script: opening lines, transitions between performances, and a vote of thanks, all in simple English you can say aloud without tripping. Practise it twice and you will sound like you have done this before.

Before you begin: three rules for anchors

Speak slowly. Nervous anchors rush, and a rushed line loses the hall. Smile when you introduce performers - the audience takes its energy from you. And keep your cue cards in the order of the programme, not the order you memorised.

Opening lines

"A very good morning to our respected Principal, our teachers, and my dear friends. Today is 14 November - Children's Day - the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who loved children and believed they are the future of our nation. We celebrate his birthday every year as a day that belongs entirely to us, the students. On behalf of everyone here, I welcome you all to our Children's Day celebration. Let's begin!"

If two anchors are sharing the stage, split it: the first anchor delivers the welcome, the second adds, "We have a wonderful morning planned for you - dances, songs, a skit, and a few surprises. So sit back, clap loudly, and enjoy the show!"

Introducing the first performance

"Every celebration needs a bright start, and ours begins with a welcome dance by the students of Class 5. Put your hands together and give them a big round of applause!"

After the performance: "Wasn't that beautiful? Let's have one more round of applause for our Class 5 dancers."

Transitions between performances

Transitions are where anchors earn their applause. Keep each one to two or three lines:

Before a song: "They say music is the language of the heart. Our next performers are going to prove it. Please welcome the school choir with a special Children's Day song!"

Before a skit: "Laughter is the best gift we can give each other today. The students of Class 7 have prepared a skit that will make you smile - and think. Here they are!"

Before a speech: "Children's Day reminds us how lucky we are to be students. To put that feeling into words, please welcome [name] from Class [X], who will share a Children's Day speech with us." If you are helping a friend prepare that speech, our Children's Day speech in English has ready-made versions for every class.

Keeping the hall with you

If a performance is delayed, never go silent. Fill the gap: "While our next performers get ready, let me ask you a question. Does anyone know why we celebrate Children's Day on 14 November? Yes - it is Chacha Nehru's birthday! He was called Chacha Nehru because of his love for children." Small interactions like this keep three hundred students seated and listening.

Prize distribution and thank-yous

"Now comes the moment many of us have been waiting for - the prize distribution. I request our Principal to come on stage and award the winners of today's competitions. Congratulations to every winner, and to everyone who participated - performing on stage takes courage, and you all showed it today."

Vote of thanks and closing

"What a wonderful morning this has been! Thank you to our Principal and teachers for organising this celebration, to every performer who practised for weeks, and to all of you for being such a cheerful audience. Children's Day comes once a year, but the joy of today will stay with us much longer. Happy Children's Day, everyone. Thank you, and have a lovely day!"

Practise plan for first-time anchors

Read the full script aloud twice the day before, once in front of a family member. Mark the names of performers and teachers clearly on your cue cards - mispronouncing a name is the mistake audiences remember. On the day, arrive early, test the microphone, and take three slow breaths before your opening line. If public speaking makes you nervous in general, the delivery tips in our Diwali speech guide work for anchoring too.

Frequently asked questions

When is Children's Day 2026 in India?

Children's Day is on Saturday, 14 November 2026, the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Many schools will hold their functions on Friday, 13 November.

How long should an anchoring script be?

Plan two to three spoken lines per transition. A full one-hour function needs roughly one page of anchor lines, plus cue cards with performer names and the programme order.

Can two students anchor together?

Yes. Split the script by section: one anchor welcomes and introduces performances, the other handles transitions and the vote of thanks. Alternate lines in the opening so both voices settle early.

Pause, smile, and glance at your cue card - the audience reads a calm pause as confidence. Never apologise mid-stage; simply continue from the next line.
