Children's Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 14 November. If your child has been asked to speak at the school function, you will find three ready-to-use speeches below - a 10-line version for young children, a short 150-word speech, and a fuller version for older students - plus simple tips that make any of them sound confident on stage.

Why India celebrates Children's Day on 14 November

Children's Day, or Bal Diwas, marks the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who was born on 14 November 1889. Nehru was famously fond of children - they called him Chacha Nehru - and after his death in 1964, India began celebrating his birthday as Children's Day. Schools mark it with cultural programmes, games, and speeches like the one your child is about to give.

10-line Children's Day speech (Classes 1-3)

Good morning, respected teachers and my dear friends.

Today we are celebrating Children's Day. It is celebrated on 14 November every year. This day is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister. He loved children very much, so we lovingly called him Chacha Nehru. He believed that children are the future of our country. On this day our teachers organise games, songs and fun activities for us. I feel very happy and lucky to be a child. I promise to study well, be kind, and make my teachers and parents proud. Thank you, and Happy Children's Day to everyone!

Short Children's Day speech, about 150 words (Classes 4-6)

Good morning, respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today we have gathered to celebrate Children's Day, which is celebrated across India on 14 November every year.

This special day is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. Children loved him and called him Chacha Nehru, and he loved them back just as much. He always said that children are the real strength of a nation, and that the way we nurture our children decides the future of our country.

Children's Day reminds us of two things. First, that every child deserves love, education and a safe childhood. Second, that we children also have a duty - to study honestly, respect our elders, and grow into good human beings.

On behalf of all my friends, I thank our teachers, who work hard every day to help us grow. Happy Children's Day to everyone. Thank you!

Full Children's Day speech, about 250 words (Classes 7-10)

A very good morning to our respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. I feel honoured to stand before you on Children's Day, celebrated every year on 14 November, the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.

Why do we dedicate a day to children? Nehru believed that children are not just the future of the nation - they are its present too. A country that educates, protects and encourages its children builds its own tomorrow. After his passing in 1964, India chose to remember him through the people he loved most: children. That is why 14 November became Bal Diwas.

But Children's Day is more than sweets, games and a holiday from homework. It carries a quiet message. Around the world, and even in our own country, many children still do not get the childhood they deserve - the chance to go to school, to play, to dream. When we celebrate today, we are also reminding ourselves that every child has rights, and every adult has a responsibility towards them.

And we, the children, have a responsibility too. Our teachers and parents give us their time and trust every single day. The best way to thank them is simple: be curious, be honest, be kind, and never stop asking questions. That is what Chacha Nehru would have wanted.

So today, let us enjoy every game and every song - and tomorrow, let us get back to becoming the kind of adults our country needs. Happy Children's Day! Thank you.

Five tips that make any speech sound better

  • Practise out loud, not in the head. Three full run-throughs aloud beat ten silent readings.
  • Slow down. Nervous speakers rush. Aim for about half the speed that feels natural.
  • Memorise the first two lines only. A strong start settles the nerves; note cards can carry the rest.
  • Look up at full stops. Eye contact at the end of a sentence makes a child look twice as confident.
  • Smile at "Happy Children's Day". The ending is what the audience remembers.

If your child freezes at the idea of speaking in English on stage, a few sessions with a patient tutor help more than another week of home practice. Our English tutor guide explains how to find the right one, and how spoken English classes compare on fees if you want a group setting instead.
