CBSE has released the sample question papers and marking schemes for Classes 10 and 12 for the 2026-27 session, and they are the single most useful free resource for the 2027 board exams. The board's official notification, dated 21 September 2026 on cbseacademic.nic.in, confirms the papers are live on the CBSE Academic website, and that the question paper design and passing criteria are unchanged from last year. Here is where to get them and, more importantly, how to use them so they actually move your marks.
What exactly has CBSE released?
For every subject in Class 10 and Class 12, CBSE publishes two documents:
- Sample Question Paper (SQP): a full-length paper built exactly to the current blueprint - the same sections, marks distribution, and question types your child will see in the 2027 boards.
- Marking Scheme (MS): the official answer key showing how marks are split step by step. This is the part most students ignore, and it is where the real learning sits, because it tells you exactly what the examiner awards marks for.
The board issues these, in its own words, to give a broad understanding of the question paper design and to guide classroom teaching. The 2026-27 notification also states clearly that there is no change in the question paper design or assessment pattern this year, and passing criteria remain the same as 2025-26.
Where to download the official papers
Use only the CBSE Academic website; third-party sites often repost old papers under new titles. As of 23 October 2026, per CBSE's official notification, the papers are at:
- Class 10: the SQP_CLASSX_2026-27 page on cbseacademic.nic.in
- Class 12: the SQP_CLASSXII_2026-27 page on cbseacademic.nic.in
Each subject row has two links: SQP for the paper and MS for the marking scheme. Download both for every subject your child is taking, and keep them in one folder. If you want the exam dates alongside, our CBSE Class 10 date sheet 2027 post tracks the schedule.
How to use sample papers so they actually raise marks
Most students solve a sample paper, check the score, feel good or bad, and move on. That wastes eighty percent of its value. This is the method that works:
- Write it like the real exam. Three hours, pen and paper, no phone, no pausing. The stamina and time pressure are part of the training.
- Mark it with the official marking scheme, not the answer. Read how the scheme splits marks - definition one mark, formula one mark, steps two marks. Students routinely lose 10 to 15 marks per paper not on knowledge but on missing steps and presentation.
- Keep an error log. One notebook page per paper: which chapter, what kind of mistake (concept, calculation, presentation, time). After three papers, the pattern is obvious, and that pattern is your revision plan.
- Re-do the weak paper after ten days. Same paper, fresh attempt. If the score does not jump, the concept is still broken and needs teaching, not more practice.
When to start and how many to solve
With boards in February-March, the natural rhythm is: finish the syllabus revision by December, then one sample paper per subject per week from January, all under timed conditions. Alongside the official SQP, CBSE's previous years' board papers are the next best practice; the official SQP shows the pattern, and past papers show the range of questions within it. For maths specifically, our guide to scoring full marks in maths pairs well with SQP practice.
One caution: do not treat sample papers as a prediction of the actual questions. They define the pattern, not the content. A student who has revised the full syllabus and used SQPs for technique will beat one who gambled on guessed questions. If a specific chapter keeps failing in the error log, a few one-on-one sessions fix it faster than solo re-reading; our guide to finding the right tutor explains how to choose help.
