If your child wants to study law at a National Law University, there are nine days left to act. CLAT 2027 registration closes on 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM, and the exam itself is on Sunday, 6 December 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, conducted offline at centres across India. These details come from the Consortium of NLUs' official CLAT 2027 instructions, published on the consortium's website. Here is the fee, the application process, and what a student should do between now and December.

What is CLAT and why does it matter?

CLAT, the Common Law Admission Test, is the single entrance exam for admission to the five-year integrated law programmes at 26 National Law Universities, including the most sought-after ones like NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, and NLU Delhi's peers. For a student aiming at a top law school, CLAT is the main door in. It is taken by students in Class 12 or those who have just finished it, though many start preparing a year or two earlier.

CLAT 2027: the dates that matter

As of 22 October 2026, per the official CLAT 2027 instructions on the Consortium of NLUs website:

  • Registration closes: 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM. The form must be fully submitted and paid by then; incomplete forms are not considered.
  • Exam date: Sunday, 6 December 2026, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (2:00 to 4:40 PM for eligible PwD candidates), in offline mode.
  • Application fee: Rs 4,000 for General and OBC candidates; Rs 3,500 for SC, ST, BPL, and PwD candidates. Previous years' question papers cost Rs 500 extra. The fee is non-refundable.

One warning from the official instructions, worth repeating: once the form is submitted and paid, you cannot change the programme or category, and no updates are entertained after the closing date. Fill it carefully, with names exactly as they appear on certificates and marksheets.

How to apply for CLAT 2027

  1. Go to the Consortium of NLUs website (consortiumofnlus.ac.in) and open the CLAT 2027 section.
  2. Register with the student's mobile number and email ID. An OTP validates the mobile number.
  3. Fill the application form carefully. Names must match certificates and ID proof exactly; mismatches can disqualify a candidature.
  4. Upload the required documents, pay the fee online, and submit. Save the confirmation.
  5. If more than one form is submitted, only the last one counts, and earlier fees are not refunded, so get it right the first time.

Do not leave this for 30 or 31 October. Payment gateways clog in the final days of every major exam registration, and the consortium is explicit that last-minute hassles are the candidate's problem, not theirs.

What the exam tests

CLAT UG is a two-hour paper built around comprehension. The five sections are English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. Almost every question hangs off a passage: the exam rewards fast, accurate reading far more than memorised facts. The tie-breaker, per the official instructions, is higher marks in the Legal Reasoning section.

This has a practical implication for preparation: a student who reads well and practises passage-based questions daily has an edge over one who crams GK books. Previous years' papers, available from the consortium for Rs 500, are the closest thing to the real exam.

Six weeks to go: how to use them

  • Make reading the daily habit. One editorial and one long-form article a day, summarised in the student's own words, builds exactly the muscle CLAT tests.
  • Take one timed mock a week. Two hours, no phone, full paper. Review every mistake the same day.
  • Cover current affairs month by month. Focus on the last twelve months, with extra attention to legal and constitutional news.
  • Do not ignore maths. Quantitative Techniques is small but made of class-10-level questions. Easy marks lost by neglect are still marks lost.
  • Get help for stuck areas. If logical reasoning or maths stays stubbornly weak, a few one-on-one sessions fix it faster than self-study. Our guide to finding the right tutor explains how to choose one, and home tuition vs coaching helps you decide the format.
